The statue is a contemporary variant of the equestrian statue, often erected in honor of the King, Emperor or Admiral, this time a Monument for the hardworking deliveryman, a relatively new profession that has suddenly appeared everywhere and has started to determine our street scene; working hard for low pay. Since the pandemic we know that it is an essential profession; In other words, these are modern-day heroes!
Hence this National Monument for the Delivery Person... of course with a certain wink. Truly, another Monument, with new imaginations for our diverse, highly layered and complex society!
The work is made up of brightly lacquered elements cut from steel sheet and glass: the RED mount (or... electric bicycle?!) refers to Calder's sculptures; the BLUE body, a neo-constructivist sculpture. The blown GLASS parts refer to cartoons and on the back: a real GOLD cube, the precious cargo, the coveted consumer item.
Hans has previously created the Marten Toonder Monument (in collaboration with De Cartoonisten) and the Guest Worker Monument, both in Rotterdam. He has also been selected for the Golden Earring Monument, which is to appear in The Hague.
Since graduating in 1988 from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, Hans van Bentem (1965) has been steadily working on an oeuvre of Monumental Sculptures, extensive installations and glass and light objects, as free work and on commission, in public spaces. space and for galleries and museums. He uses classic, traditional materials to depict his contemporary stories. To this end, he is always looking for craft workshops where certain age-old techniques are still used. As a result, he comes (among others) for porcelain in China, bronze in India, wood in Senegal and Indonesia, crystal in the Czech Republic. But also in the Netherlands, where he collaborates with various glass and ceramic studios and age-old companies. In 2012 he created the installations "Keep on Dreaming!" for the period rooms of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. which was subsequently shown as a traveling exhibition at various historical locations. He recently worked on crystal objects for the famous 250-year-old French Baccarat and designed light objects for the Beurspassage in Amsterdam the Municipality of Amsterdam in collaboration with The Port Authority.
